Coffee

  1. Beneficial effects.
    1. Decreased mortality (5/17/12)
      1. "In this large prospective study, coffee consumption was inversely associated with total and cause-specific mortality. " (N Engl J Med 2012; 366:1891-1904May 17, 2012, 5/17/12)
    2. Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes
      1. "people who drink four or more cups of coffee daily have a 50 percent lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. And every additional cup of coffee brings another decrease in risk of almost 7 percent." (1/18/12)
      2. "Our findings suggest that coffee consumption does not increase the risk of chronic disease, but it may be linked to a lower risk of T2D [type 2 diabetes] [HR: 0.77]." ( Am J Clin Nutr April 2012vol. 95 no. 4 901-908, 3/20/12)
    3. Women who drink more coffee may suffer less depression.
    4. "These prospective data suggest that four or more cups of coffee per day are associated with a lower risk of endometrial cancer." (11/24/11)
    5. "Coffee CC [caffeine consumption] is associated with a significant reduction in risk of fibrosis [scaring which can lead to cirrhosis] among NASH [Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (fatty liver not due to alcohol)] patients." (Hepatology 2/2/12)
    6. "Adding coffee-derived MOS [Mannogligosacharides] to a weight-loss diet enhanced both weight and adipose tissue losses in men [but not women], suggesting a potential functional use of MOS for weight management and improvement in adipose tissue distribution." (Obesity, 2/9/12)
