The text beneath the cartoon reads:

Romanism is a Monster, with arms of Stanic power and strength, reaching to the very ends of the earth, the arm of superstition crushing the American child, that of subversion crushing the American Flag, that of bigotry crushing the American Public School, that of ignorance crushing the credulous dupe, that of corruption crushing the law of the land, that of greed grasping public moneys, that of tranny destroying freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, all over the world -per totam orbem tervarum.

Asprin

  1. "Despite important reductions in nonfatal MI [myocardial infarction] [10%], aspirin prophylaxis in people without prior CVD [cardiovascular disease] does not lead to reductions in either cardiovascular death or cancer mortality. Because the benefits are further offset by clinically important bleeding events, routine use of aspirin for primary prevention is not warranted and treatment decisions need to be considered on a case-by-case basis." ( Arch Intern Med. 2012;172(3):209-216, 2/15/12)

However, the results show "...at day 7 more participants treated with amoxicillin reported symptom improvement (74% vs 56%, respectively; P = .02)." (JAMA 2/14/12)

Resveratrol

  1. Despite resveratrol's well-documented health benefits, its mechanism of action remains controversial. In particular, the direct molecular target of resveratrol has been elusive. Park et al. now show that resveratrol directly inhibits cAMP-dependent phosphodiesterases, triggering a cascade of events that converge on the important energy-sensing metabolic regulators AMPK, SIRT1, and PGC-1α. 2. All knowledge is ultimately based on faith. The scientist bases his knowledge on observation, however before he can base his knowledge on observation he must have faith that his observations are real. He can not observe that his observations are real; that would be circular reasoning. The mathematician bases her knowledge on logic, however before she can base her knowledge on logic she must have faith that logic is true. She can not prove logic is true using logic; that would be circular reasoning. (6/4/13)
