Spirituality v.s Religion

For years I having been trying to figure out what "spiritual but not religious" means. The best I can figure is it is code for: "I don't go to church but still do not consider myself shallow" for you can not be truly spiritual without a religious basis. Religion in its broadest scene is a set of briefs about the nature, purpose and creation of the universe. How can you be spiritual if you do not believe in something beyond the physical universe and if you believe in something outside the physical universe than that is a religious brief.

2/19/11: Religion is to spirituality as reading the owners manual is to driving the car. Spirituality transcends religion. The problem with religion is that some never reach spirituality, by punting religion into practice. How tragic it would be to have a new car but never drive it because you are to focused on the owners manual. At the same time, reading the owners manual is be a big help

(7/15/11) Religious practices increase the strength of our spirituality. This may be a way to teast if our religious practices are true by if we are growing spirituality.

Spirituality without theology is just making stuff up.It, like a technology without any scientific basis, is doomed to fail. (8/30/11)
