Purgatory

"One often-used analogy to clarify the need for purgatory is that of a man who commits suicide by jumping off a twenty-story building.  On the way down he sincerely repents of his sin.  God hears and forgives the man.  However, there still will be some very unpleasant consequences when he hits the ground!  Our sin has consequences other than guilt, and these consequences are our temporal punishment--temporal because they only last for a time rather than for eternity. “ Catholic Customs, Page 95, (12/8/11)
