Vitamin E

  1. Although Vitamin E was discovered in 1922 how it worked has not been known until now: "Our work suggests a novel biological function for vitamin E in promoting myocyte [muscle cell] plasma [cell] membrane repair." (12/20/11)
  2. Adverse Effects (3/16/12)
    1. Increased risk of death (3/16/12)
      1. "We found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention. Beta-carotene and vitamin E seem to increase mortality, and so may higher doses of vitamin A. " ( The Cochrane Collaboration, 3/16/12) 
    2. Increased risk of prostate cancer (3/16/12)
      1. "Dietary supplementation with vitamin E [400 IU/day] significantly increased the risk of prostate cancer among healthy men." (JAMA, 2/5/12)
